Telehealth FAQs

What equipment do I need?

You will need a computer, laptop, smart phone, or tablet that has a reliable internet connection with a webcam and microphone. You will also need to be able to find a private space where you won’t be overheard or interrupted for the session (e.g. a room in your house where you can close the door).

Which telehealth platform do you use?

We use secure telehealth software called Coviu (learn more here). We use Coviu because it has been vetted and recommended by the Australian Psychological Society (APS) to meet all the essential privacy, security and technical requirements for providing health services online.

You don’t need to download any software on your end. Your psychologist will schedule an online meeting in Coviu for the time you have arranged and send you a link via SMS or email to join this meeting. When it is time for your appointment, just click on the link to be taken to the meeting.

If there are any problems with the connection, we typically try to refresh the meeting and then if that doesn’t help then continue the session by phone. Happily, most of the time this isn’t necessary.

Are online consultations as effective as face to face sessions?

Perhaps surprisingly, telehealth psychology treatment has been found to be as effective as face to face treatment for a range of mental health issues. It has both strengths and limitations. One obvious strength is that online consultations can be done in situations where you can’t get to face to face sessions (e.g. current social distancing laws, living in remote areas, or perhaps anxiety and avoidance has become so strong that leaving the house is extremely difficult). Some people also feel more comfortable opening up over this format initially. One downside can be occasional technical hiccups or if you really want to take to someone in the same physical space. Also, there are some mental health issues that may be hard to safely or effectively manage through online consultations alone.

We encourage you to contact us with any questions about whether online consultations would be suitable and helpful for your situation.
